The Association

Association “Katholisches Gesellenhaus” in Düsseldorf

The early days

It all began with Adolph Kolping around 200 years ago. Adolph Kolping was a German Roman Catholic priest who founded Journeymen’s Societies and Houses. Not only did these Houses become the spiritual home for travelling journeymen, but they also served as a meeting place and community centre. Over time, this resulted in the basic cornerstones of all Kolpinghouses: training and further education, socializing with people from all walks of life, community, and mutual help.

Düsseldorf

In 1849, a Catholic Journeymen's Association was founded in Düsseldorf, which 18 years later purchased a building on Bilker Straße and established its first Kolpinghouse. The groundbreaking ceremony for the House on Blücherstraße took place in 1909, with the opening ceremony being held just one year later. The Association “Katholisches Gesellenhaus” was founded in 1896 to ensure the operation of the Houses in Düsseldorf.

Institutions

To continue in the spirit of Adolph Kolping and paving the way for modern, future-oriented work, the buildings were extensively renovated, and a hotel area was integrated into the House on Bilker Straße. The Kolpinghouse on Bilker Straße was then given the name "Townhouse Düsseldorf".

Support

In line with our social commitment, our Houses provide accommodation for young people. In the Youth Foyer Kolpinghouse Blücherstraße, they receive support and assistance from pedagogical professionals in the fields of social, educational, and professional integration as needed.

Ownership

The owner of the Houses in Düsseldorf is the Association “Katholisches Gesellenhaus” from 1896, while the legal entity for the hotel business is KGH Betriebs GmbH.
